Little Miss Sick

As you all know through my Twitter and Plurk updates, I have been sick for the last couple of days. Missing work, experiencing no-pain blood sample extraction (if that's how you call it), bland taste buds, eating only instant ramen, banana and oranges, taking meds as prescribed, chugging water as many times as possible are only but a few of the things I needed to do during my ordeal. If only I could replace the pills I needed to take with the "I love you's" I could be extra happier.

It all started last Saturday. I could not bring myself to sleep no matter how I tried (well I never really did try hard). I kept closing my eyes to no avail until it was almost wake up time again and get ready to work. I dozed off. I woke up with a heavy head and went to work sleepy so I didn't have a choice but to load up on caffeine to keep me up for the rest of my shift. I finished about four cups of rebellion blend coffee (Italian Brew). I was already coughing by then. Midshift, I felt a little hot and feverish so I went to the clinic. The company nurse gave me some pills for my cough after ruling out that I am not pregnant (it couldn't be that fast LOL). I managed to end the shift and went home and ate breakfast and took some flu pills. Ahhh, I was scared to say the least (what with the flu scare spreading around like wildfire). My temperature ranged from 37.5C to 38.5C the whole day I was asleep. I wasn't able to go to the hospital because I felt so dizzy and I could not manage to get up on my own. I was just lying in bed the whole day, sleeping and checking out blogs in between. Well, anyway, the day passed by and Sunday night was a chilly night for me even though it was so humid. I am draped in a blanket all night because I felt too cold. I'm still dizzy and feverish and coughing made my chest area hurt. I didn't go to work.

The next morning, Jonah and Joyce brought me something to eat (how thoughtful!) because they know I wasn't eating and Joyce said we really need to go to the hospital already. So off we go after breakfast at the Makati Medical Center. As soon as we reached the hospital's emergency unit, fear crept in. All the people out there were wearing masks. Ahhh, damn AH1N1. Up to that point, I was still thinking I may have it in my system already. When it was my turn in the triage room, I was asked a few questions and glad to say that I was still coherent enough to answer all of them. Initial finding was my cough is viral and have urinary tract infection. I was told I needed to have some lab work done on my blood and urine. I gave them the samples they need and they got the blood from me (first time that I didn't feel a thing, literally no pain even the needle was BIG). I'm blaming the numerous cups of coffee I chugged down last week and myself for being lazy in drinking water. We had to wait for a couple of hours for the results of the lab tests to be released. And lo and behold, I have UTI (first time ever). This explains why I feel some pain in my lower extremities and my backside too. I was relieved that I don't have AH1N1 though but then again I am still sick.

Went home and slept again. I'll start with new medicines the day after the hospital visit. The pain is excruciating but still tolerable (I have a very high tolerance for pain, I think). I missed work again and woke up in the middle of the night sweating profusely so I had to get up and drink some more water. Relief! Jonah, Joyce and Joi made pasta for dinner and wow that was the only decent meal I had for the last 4 days. And yay, my taste buds are back. The pasta was yummy (tuna with garden tomatoes, bell pepper, parsley and basil -- it looked like pasta primavera minus the tomato sauce).

I am recovering quite well and I am hoping to be able to get back to work Thursday night. Thank you to everyone who wished me well...
